Urban Housing for the Future

Prologue

Going over the flyover beside Keppel Harbour is always a delightful experience. It is always interesting to see the clusters of containers - each of different colours - continuously moving, never resting. These elements that make up Keppel Harbour seem to lead you in as you look from afar, urging you to explore futher.

 

Keppel Harbour has incited a sense of curiousity within you. Approaching the Harbour itself, you soon start to realize what you had observed from afar is in complete constrast to being in the harbour. The long narrow pathways are rigid, and clear defining spaces are formed. Walking between these pathways defined by the containers, you start to learn more about them. “12...13...”, you count the steps you take to cover the length of a container. Unknowingly, you begin to understand the scale, proportions, and the little things that make up Keppel Harbour.

 

These series of discoveries keep you engaged. Having one thing left to explore, the containers themselves, you can’t help but approach one. As you lay your hands on the containers, you start to realize how the corrugated steel creases in and out; giving it strength and a peculiar form of rhythm.

 

The journey is coming to an end. The port will soon be converted into a new area for residential development. However, the history of Keppel Harbour and its contributions should not be cleared away that easily. You want people to know more about Keppel, you want people to experience what many have gone through... But how?
