URBAN CODE
lessons for understanding the city
We can learn a lot from cities and districts. The way the shops are planned, the pathways that direct people from places to places, the planning of different spaces in a plaza to cater for different programs.
In this 2-week program, we got to take a break from our projects to observe the area of Ang Mo Kio - a district rich in history and culture in Singapore.
In the first week, we were exposed to Urban Code a book by Anne Mikoleit and Moritz Pürckhauer. The book offers 100 "lessons" - observations and maxims - that help us understand the language that cities speak. We would then identify spaces within the urban fabric of Ang Mo Kio that reflected these qualities. In the following week, we were tasked to make improvements to the lack found in Ang Mo Kio.

Code 03: Street Vendors facilitate pedestrian Movement
Counterintuitive as it may seem,
street vendors have a positive
effect on pedestrian circulation. They provide people with visual and acoustic reference points that contribute to pedestrians’ sense of security.
