PRELUDE STUDIES

alter ego [installation]

Rivers of Colour, Ocean of Butterflies

Inspired by Red Hong Yi, our group re-interpreted the way she composed her artwork as a mean to share and connect people. Her style of art involves researching on the subject she would like to create, and using meaningful materials to compose her artwork. Essentially, her work is about innovating small things together to form a big picture.

Our group took on a similar, yet different approach to this installation. We took the essence of Hong Yi’s intention of “Small things coming together to form a big picture” and how it can come in a form of transformation, much like many rivers coming together to form an Ocean.

In our installation, streams of different colours extrude from the ground and head towards the wall. As the colours approach the wall, they start to mix and blend together. The streams of colours transform into butterflies of diverse patterns and colours emerging out of the wall. These butterflies may appear to be on their own; but actually form the silhouette of one single butterfly when viewed from the front, showing how there is unity amongst such diversity.
