PROJECT ONE

dwelling [place]

About Red Hong Yi

Red Hong Yi is an inspiration for many. Dubbed the “The artists who paints but not with a paintbrush”, she uses everyday materials to compose her work. She discovered her style of art by China’s production power and abundance of materials found in wholesale markets and was subsequently inspired by it. Her work is innovative and this is evident through the way she creatively put together everyday materials (Socks, Teabags, Flowers, and Coffee Stains) to create art pieces.

Inspirations

The portrait of Jackie Chan, made with chopsticks inspired the dwelling. The artwork puts emphasis on proportions and solids and voids. Through the elegant use of chopsticks in varying intensity, she creates a juxtaposition of solids and voids to compose the portrait of Jackie Chan.

Design Intent

The dwelling takes inspiration from Red Hong Yi's art work of Jackie Chan. It reciprocated her idea of organization of elements based on context and culture to create a composition.

Nature and Architectural Space

The solids in the dwelling are the building blocks while the voids are natural spaces such as trees, grass or water. Together, they affect and influence each other to determine the form and spaces.

Grass runs into the spaces of the building blocks.

High openings on the building blocks to reveal the foliage of the trees.

Water elements intertwining with spaces.
