COOL IDEAS FOR BETTER HDB LIVING COMPETITION

Volume Bar

3/2016

Hosted by the Housing Development Board (HDB), this competition enabled students to look at HDBs, not only from the standpoint of an accomodator, but also a designer.

The competition puts forth several issues that daunt HDBs today. These include, noise from the playgrounds, dissemination of information through noticeboards, and the safety of children in the estate. My team took on the challenge of noise and came up with the solution of [Volume Bar].

Volume Bar

Our approach to the issue was not to directly mitigate the noise from the source, but to raise awareness within the community. The idea, was the transmission of information through colour variation as a form of indication.

Owners have the option to pull translucent of layers of fabric out along the handrails in the corridor. As the volume gets more unbearable, another layer of sheet can be pulled out, overlapping with the previous. The result is the "stacking" of colours to form another colour which will indicate to the children playing in the playground the noise-level they are at.
